Creation Story

Âmow-piyêsîs Iskwew ; ᐋᒧᐤᐱᔦᓰᐢ; Hummingbird Woman;
Ravina Katie Morgan

 is a member of Smiths Landing First Nation in Treaty 8 (Northwest Territories). With roots in Tthebatthi Dënésułiné, Cree, Métis, and South Asian ancestry, Ravina was born and raised on the shared, traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Semiahmoo, sc̓əwaθenaɁɬ, Kwantlen, and Katzie First Nations.

Ravina is deeply committed to revitalizing ancestral knowledge through the power of blood memory, immersing herself in her culture and community. Beadwork has become medicine for Ravina and her family, playing an important role in reclaiming teachings and fostering healing across five living generations.

As a beadwork artist, HummingbeadWoman is a reflection on her traditional name, Âmow-piyêsîs Iskwew, Hummingbird Woman, and her passion for beadwork. Each piece reflects her journey of reconnection and cultural revitalization.

Ravina draws much of her inspiration from her Grandma Mar, whose encouragement has helped shape her style and love of working with traditional materials such as smoke-tanned hides, birch bark, medicines, and antler pieces, along with the most flattering beads that she can find. Ravina’s passion for sharing her craft extends beyond her own creations, as she is asked to facilitate beading workshops, which she absolutely loves—especially intergenerational beading circles that bring together multiple generations through the art of beadwork.

Beading has always been a part of Ravina’s journey. She began beading as a youth and has been self-taught, fulfilling a deep ancestral dream that has only grown stronger over the years.
